How to Play 1000 – Rules for 1000 Card Game

1000 is a trick-taking type card game just like Hearts and Pitch. Here is the guide on How to Play 1000.

How to Play 1000

The requirements to Play 1000

A 24 cards deck is required. You can create this deck by removing all cards except Ace (A), King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J), 10, and 9 of all four suits from the Standard 52 cards deck. Also, as mentioned above 3 players are required to play 1000.

The Object in 1000 Card Game

The main object in 1000 is to be the first player to score 1000 points. A player scores points based on the value of the cards won in a trick. A trick includes one card played by each player.

Selecting the Dealer and Dealing The Cards

The dealer is selected randomly. After selection, the dealer deals 7 cards to each player face-down, one card at a time. The dealer also deals 3 cards in the middle. The dealership transfers to the player on the left of the dealer at the end of each round.

The Bidding

After dealing the cards, the bidding begins. The player on the left of the dealer is first to bid and then the turn to bid moves in a clockwise manner. Each player bids the number of points that he expects to win at the end of each round.

Each bid should be higher than the previous bid. The minimum bid is 100 and the bid should be in multiples of 5. Example: 100, 105, 110, 115, and so on.

If a player does not want to bid then he can pass. A player making a pass is not able to bid anymore. The last player standing wins the bid. After bidding, the dealer turns up the 3 cards of the middle.

The bid winner takes those 3 cards in his hands with the 7 cards initially dealt to him and then passes one unwanted card to each of the other players face-down.

If the first two players pass the bid then the dealer has to take the bid for 100 points. A player who has a marriage(King and Queen of the same suit) in his hand can only bid more than 120 points.

If a player has all four 9s in his hands after dealing or after the bid winner passes the cards, he can throw the hand immediately and the dealer has to deal new cards.

How to Play 1000

The bid winner leads the first trick by playing a card in the middle. And then each player plays a card in a clockwise manner. A trick includes one card played by each player. All players have to follow the suit led. However, if a player cannot follow the suit led, he can play a card of any other suit.

The player who played the highest-ranking card of the suit led wins the trick. Winner of a trick leads the next trick and also he takes all the cards played during the trick he won. A round ends when all cards are played.

If a player has a marriage(King and Queen of the same suit), he can declare the marriage and score points. A player can only declare a marriage after winning a trick. After declaring a marriage, the player has to lead the next trick with one of those two cards.

Whenever a player declares a marriage, the suit of that marriage becomes the Trump suit until the next marriage is declared. A trump suited card outranks all other suited cards. If the Trump-suited cards are played during a trick then the player who played the highest-ranking Trump-suited card wins the trick.

Scoring in 1000

After completing a round, the players’ scores are counted. The player scores points based on the value of the cards won by the player. The points scored by the players are rounded off to the nearest of 5. The value of the cards are as follows:

Ace (A)11 Points
1010 Points
King (K)4 Points
Queen (Q)3 Points
Jack (J)2 Points

The player also scores points for each marriage declared. The points vary based on the suit of the marriage as shown in the next table.

Marriage SuitPoints
Hearts100 Points

If the bid winner scores the same or more points than mentioned in the bid, then he scores those points. And if the bid winner could not fulfill the bid, then the points bid by him are deducted from his total points.

If a player scores Zero in a round then his score is reduced by 120 points.

The Barrel

If a player has a score between 880 points to 995 points, it is known as being on the barrel. And the player’s score is reduced to 880 points.

If a player is on the barrel, he has a chance to win the game by winning the bid and winning 120 or more points in one of the three following rounds.

There are 3 possibilities:
