Kemps is an easy-to-play fun card game to play with friends and family. This is our guide on How to Play Kemps. So, let’s start the guide.
The requirements to play Kemps:
A standard deck of 52 cards is used. However, depending on the number of players, more than one deck may be required. If there are more than 10 players, two 52 cards standard decks are required.
Kemps is played in pairs and a minimum of 2 pairs are required to play the game. So, at least 4 players are required and there is no limit for maximum players. However, the number of players should be even to ensure that all players form part of a pair.
The Object in Kemps
In Kemps, whenever a team wins a round, its opponent teams score a letter of the word “KEMPS”. Also, whenever a team loses in the case of “Stop Kemps”(Explained letter in the guide), it scores a letter of the word “KEMPS”.
When a team completes the whole word “KEMPS”, it loses the game. So, the main objective is not to score the word “KEMPS” and remain in the game till the end.
The Object in Individual Rounds of Kemps
The main object in a round is to obtain four cards of the same rank and after obtaining the cards, make the partner shout “Kemps”. But the partners can’t talk or speak to one another during the game. So, they have to set some signals or gestures to communicate to one another about when to shout “Kemps”.
Before starting the game, all players are divided into teams having two players each. After forming the teams, some preparation time is given to all the teams to decide the signals or gestures. But remember, signals must be non-verbal.
After that, the players get settle down and the players of the same team should sit in front of one another.
Dealing the Cards
The dealer deals four cards to each player and also places 4 fresh cards, face-up, in the center of the table. (There are no rules for the selection of the dealer, players can select the dealer randomly)
How to Play Kemps
After receiving the cards, the players start exchanging them with the cards in the center of the table and tries to get four cards of the same rank.
There is no structured turn pattern. So, every player is free to exchange a card with the cards in the center at any time. But any player should not have more than four cards in hand at a time. Also, if two or more players want the same card from the table then the first one to touch the card gets that card.
If during the game, at any point no players want to exchange a card with the cards in the center then the dealer replaces the four cards from the center with the new fresh cards and the game continues.
The round ends in two different ways:
1. When a player shouts “Kemps” or “Stop Kemps”
As soon as a player manages to get four cards of the same rank, He gives the signal to his partner. The partner shouts “Kemps” and wins the round and all the opponent teams scores a letter of the word “Kemps”.
Whenever a player shouts “Kemps” during the game, his partner has to reveal his cards. If he has four cards of the same rank then his team wins but if he does not have four cards of the same rank then his team loses and scores a letter of the word “Kemps”.
Whenever any player shouts “Stop Kemps”, the round ends. A player shouts “Stop Kemps” when he suspects that another player has four cards of the same rank. After a player shouts “Stop Kemps”, the player who is being stopped has to reveal his cards.
If the “Stopped” player has four cards of the same rank then his team loses the round and scores a letter of the word “Kemps”. If the “Stopped” player does not have four cards of the same rank then the team of the player who shouted “Stop Kemps” loses the round and scores a letter of the word “Kemps”.
2. At the Real Deal
Real Deal is the situation when none of the players want to exchange their cards with the cards in the center of the table and the dealer does not have fresh cards to replace the cards in the center.
At the Real Deal, the round comes to an end. Nobody wins or loses and no one scores the letter of the word “Kemps”. Dealer deals cards for the next round and a new round begins.
Winning the Game
As soon as a team completes the word “Kemps”, it loses the game. The team remaining in the game till the end wins the game.
